Gas Line Trenching and Backfill, explained.
Underground gas lines carry a fuel that demands respect, so the pipe work and connections are done by the gas utility or a qualified gas contractor. The trench is another matter. A straight, clean trench at the right depth, with proper bedding and careful backfill, makes the pipe installer’s job faster and keeps the line protected afterwards.
We dig the route, hold the trench open for the installer, add bedding and marking where required and backfill and compact once the line is in and inspected. We always call 811 first, and we do not dig near marked gas lines except by methods the line owner allows.

Do you install the gas pipe?
No. The pipe, fittings, testing and connection belong to the gas utility or a qualified gas contractor. We provide the excavation and backfill.
Who decides the trench depth?
The gas utility’s requirements and the code decide it, and the installer will tell us what they need.
What if we find an unmarked line?
We stop, secure the area and contact the owner. A strike on any line is a safety issue, not just an inconvenience, which is why we locate and pothole first.
