Utility Locating and 811 Coordination, explained.
Hitting a buried line is one of the most avoidable problems in construction. The process to avoid it is simple: call 811 before digging so the utility owners can mark their public lines, read the marks, plan around them and confirm what the marks do not cover.
Public utility owners mark their own lines, but they do not mark private lines beyond the meter, such as a water line to a barn, a buried electrical feed or an irrigation system. We help homeowners and builders understand the marks, locate private lines with appropriate tools and record what we find so future projects have a map.

How far in advance should I call 811?
Call a few working days before you plan to dig, and confirm the exact notice period and process with your state’s 811 service, since rules vary.
Do utility marks show exact depth?
No. Marks show approximate horizontal position, not depth. Verification by potholing or hand digging confirms depth.
Who marks my private water or power line to the barn?
Utility owners typically mark only their own facilities. Private lines are the owner’s responsibility, and we can help locate them.
