Water Main and Service Line Installation, explained.
A water service line carries drinking water from the utility main, through a meter, to the building. When a house is built, a lot is split or an old galvanized or lead-era line is retired, a new line has to be trenched in and joined to the system. Pipe material, depth and fittings follow the utility’s specifications and local plumbing rules.
We excavate the route, lay the line on clean bedding, install the fittings and tracer wire the specification calls for, and backfill in compacted lifts. Longer private water mains for barns, shops and second homes get the same care, including the room to thrust-block or restrain fittings where the design needs it.
Signs this service fits
- A new home or shop has no water service yet
- An old galvanized or leaking line is being retired
- A property split needs its own meter and line
- A barn, pool house or ADU needs water from the house or the street
A good fit, and what to know.
We would rather you hear the limits from us than discover them later.
A good fit when
- The tap point and the building location are known
- You want the trench, pipe and restoration handled together
- A builder needs the service in before the driveway or slab
Worth knowing
- The meter and the main tap are often completed by the water utility
- Rock in the route can add time and needs hammering or a different route
Why do it this way.
Specification-based materials
Pipe and fittings are chosen to the utility’s and the plumbing code’s requirements.
Sand or stone bedding
Clean bedding protects the pipe from sharp rock and uneven soil.
Trace what you bury
Tracer wire or marking tape makes the line findable in the future.
Minimal yard damage
Trenches are kept narrow and spoil is stacked on mats or tarps where it helps.
From first look to finished ground.
A clear sequence for every job.
- 01
Route and depth
The line route is marked, crossings are confirmed and the trench depth is set to the local requirement.
- 02
Trench and bed
The trench is cut, the bottom is trimmed and bedding is placed so the pipe sits evenly along its length.
- 03
Lay and connect
Pipe, fittings and tracer wire are installed and connected at the building and at the tap point.
- 04
Test and close
The line is pressure checked as required, then backfilled, compacted and the surface restored.

Do I need a permit for a new water line?
Often yes, and tap or connection fees can apply. Requirements differ between utilities and cities, so we explain what applies at your address.
Can you replace my old water line without tearing up the whole yard?
Where the pipe layout allows it, directional boring can replace a line with little surface disturbance. Otherwise a narrow trench is used and the lawn is restored.
How deep does a water line go?
Depth depends on the utility’s specification and local frost and cover rules. We follow the requirement for your location rather than a rule of thumb.
